BRIAN CATTIGAN - HOGMANAY POSTER - SINGLE REVIEW

23/10/2022

The Hogmanay Poster was initially created for a Loganair TV advertisement at the beginning of January, however it managed to place second out of hundreds of submissions (robbed). Brian Cattigan has therefore made the decision to self-release this which I am happy he has done so because this piece is a serious tune.

With the assistance of his drummer and pianist Iaian Kirkpatrick, singer and guitarist Brian Cattigan embarked on a solo musical odyssey and performed all over Scotland at a number of venues, most notably headlining King Tuts Wah Wah Hut on a Saturday night in Glasgow. Which, may I add, aside from the fact that it is the Wah Wah Hut, this guy is Scottish by origin and blood, which just adds to the accomplishment of what he has done. With its straightforward lyrics, harmonies, and melodies, Brian's first single of 2022 was finally released, and for me, it was a very delightful few minutes. The song's melody is incredibly fluent, starting with a zen-like arrangement of acoustic chords before a symphony of calming words take it by the hand and bring it all together. With his vocals on the track sounding amazing and perfectly matching the tone, Brian makes the most of his new more lyrical and smooth singing voice. I hear traces of the music of The Underclass, Andrew Cushin, and Joe Astley in Brian's music.

Speaking to Brian he has said that he:

"tried to capture the feeling of coming home to all your friends at the end of the year, in the pub, having a singalong."

I think he has got this one spot on, for me coming home is all about the family gathering at home to unwind and forget about the problems of the outside world. Not to mention, there are no judgments or remarks made there, so everyone feels safe and at ease to discuss anything and everything. Brian has encapsulated this comforting vibe to the song perfectly.

It is much alike to his previous releases such as While We Lay and Tell me Something, where the beauty of the release is within its simplicity. The single is due to be released on the 11th of November 2022 and this song is certainly worth a listen.
